Choosing the Right Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot

Originally from the coastal regions of Mexico, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot has become increasingly popular amongst parrot owners. Because of their attractive markings, rarity, and high intelligence levels, more and more pet owners are making the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot their parrot of choice. As the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot increases in popularity, so it increases in rarity. Found mainly in the coastal regions of Central and South America, mainly in countries such as Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize, the yellow headed parrot is now considered rare and on the endangered list because of poaching and illegal trade. Also, the yellow parrot’s endangerment is due to deforestation, resulting in the loss of their nesting habitat.

Inquisitive, vocal, and lively, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot is intriguing in many ways. Their eye-catching feathers draw attention immediately. Bright green in color with bright yellow head feathers, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot demands attention immediately. They grow to be about 14-17 inches in length, and they are considered to be a medium to large sized parrot. Their lively and vocal nature, make the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot one of the easiest parrot species to teach to speak. Some will speak easily, some will not. However, for the most part, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot species can be trained to mimic and speak within a short period of time. Patient and routine vocal training will also help owners to remedy the screeching and screaming for which the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrots are known.

Because of their large size, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot requires a larger cage than most. Needing to stretch their wings and feel at home in their cage is important for their well being. A cage with a playpen or a roof is also a good choice for the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot. They enjoy a variety of toys, perches, and swings. The Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot also enjoys chewing and gnawing. So, providing them with chunks of wood and other chew toys is important for their well being.

Yellow Headed Amazon Parrots differ slightly from other parrot species in diet needs, as well. While protein pellets are an excellent nutritional base for most parrots, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot requires a diet high in beta-carotene rich foods, as well. Root vegetables, such as, carrots, beets, rutabagas, and sweet potatoes should be integrated into their protein pellet diet as much as possible. It will assist in meeting their nutritional needs in addition to their curiosity needs.

When considering having one of these beautiful birds as a pet, owners should consider the longevity of their commitment. Yellow headed Amazon parrots can live to be sixty to eighty years old. Although no pet is perfect, these parrots are sure to give their owners hours of entertainment and pleasure.

Running Tips – Running After 40

Running is such a wonderful way to stay in shape – and even more so as you get older. There are many runners out there who are still running and doing marathons into their 80’s and 90’s. So, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t keep being a runner for life. However, after you reach 40, there are some things that you need to be aware of as you continuing your running program. Read on for tips on running as you age.

When you are training for a longer race or you are just beginning a running program after 40, you need to build up your mileage slower than if you were younger. Many runners do a walk/run program. They will do this and then slower decrease the amount of time that they are walking until they are running the entire distance. This is a great way to keep from getting injured by doing too much too soon.

An important thing for runners is to listen to what their body is telling them. I feel that this is important for all runners (and is what has kept me out on the roads for over 30 years), but even more important as you get older. If you need an extra day to get over a long run or a speed workout – take it.

Doing a weight workout a couple of times a week is great to keep your muscles strong. Make sure that you are doing both upper and lower body work. Leg extensions are a great way to keep the muscles around your knees strong and pain free. Just use a light weight – your plan is not to bulk up, but to stay strong.

If you’ve been running for many years, be aware of the fact that you will probably be slower as you get older. I’ve come to terms with that fact – and I’m alright with it. I take great joy in knowing that I’m still out there running after all these years and many that I ran with when I was younger are not running at all. As I get older, I’m happy with my runs and how it makes me feel younger than I am. Speed doesn’t matter to me at all.

Make sure that you are staying hydrated. As we get older, we sometimes don’t feel thirsty as we used to. So, be aware of this and make sure that you follow the urine test – it should be clear or pale yellow.

Running is so wonderful for you – and keeps you feeling fit and younger. Follow these tips to keep you out there on the roads for a long time.

Tips on Saving Money on Your Printer Cartridge

There’s little doubt that Hewlitt Packard printers are some of the best on the market today. Catering to home and office users with solid models that offer tons of features, the HP company is known for quality and affordability both – two things that don’t always go together. And while HP printers tend to be affordable, their ink replacement cartridges can be quite expensive.

Saving money on them is more than possible, however. There are a number of ways to do so. All it takes to find good deals is a little time and patience in finding the best buys. There are many outlets available for finding good buys on ink cartridge replacements, it’s just a matter of locating them and learning what works for you and what doesn’t.

Here are some ideas on how to save a little money while ensuring print quality remains high in the HP printer:

* Aftermarket ink cartridges can be very smart purchases. Found online and in some stores, HP cartridge replacements that are made by other companies can get the job done. Generally these ink cartridges are those that have been refurbished by the company that makes them. What this means is that old ink cartridges are recycled to be used again. The ink is replaced, the cartridge is resealed and labeled anew for resale. Depending on where aftermarket HP ink cartridges come from they can be very good purchases. Some companies that offer rehabbed replacements also offer warranties to ensure customer satisfaction. Plus, there are some companies that make brand new cartridges to fit different model printers.

* HP printer cartridge refill kits. These won’t work with every make and model, but when they do, they can be real steals. A refill kit allows you to do at home what a rehab company does. This means a single HP printer ink cartridge purchase can result in multiple uses over the life of the printer.

* Shop around for HP cartridge sales and even look at bulk purchases. If you watch retail stores, online outlets and other places that sell printer cartridges you might find some decent buys by going this route. Plus, you’ll be purchasing the HP product, so any fears that an aftermarket purchase won’t work quite right can be alleviated. Also consider bulk buys if you go through a lot. This might cost you more on the front end than a single cartridge, but the per cartridge prices could be greatly reduced.

Hp printer cartridge replacements are found in a number of locations. From online sites to regular big box retail stores, there are multiple options for those who need replacement cartridges to keep their printers up and running. Checking out the options can save you money on HP printer ink cartridge replacements.

When Disaster Strikes and Dealing With Emergencies

Did you know that most injuries during disasters are caused not by the actual event but by lack of planning and lack of appropriate management? This means that in any major event, individuals have a huge impact on whether and how they survive. Because most people will face an emergency situation at some point in their lifetime, learning how to deal with major disasters is an essential skill. Here are a few tips for dealing with natural and manmade disasters alike:

Remain Calm

However difficult this may be, it is most important that you remain calm during a major emergency. When people are panicked, they become irrational, making life-endangering decisions and major mistakes. If you find yourself feeling unstable, take a few deep breaths and try to remove yourself from the situation momentarily until you regain your composure. Always act logically instead of emotionally, and consider the consequences of your actions before taking any major steps.

Provide for Your Immediate Safety

Once you are calm, your next thought should be to provide a safe space for yourself and your loved ones. In some cases this may mean a different room of the house; in other situations, you may have to evacuate. Whatever your situation, you need to secure a safe space before thinking about anything else. If you must leave your home, plan your exit carefully, remembering that larger routes such as freeways may be clogged with other fleeing people. Bring along what pieces of your survival kit you can safely fit in your vehicle, but don’t overload your vehicle at time you most need it.

Notify Authorities

If police, fire, and medical personnel have not been notified, now is the time to inform them. Sometimes this is as easy as calling 9-1-1; at other times, this may involve physically finding emergency personnel. Although you should not endanger yourself pursuing help in a disaster, relief workers and supplies will not be available until the appropriate agencies have been made aware of the situation.

Staying Alive

Once you are physically safe and help is on its way, you should provide for your most basic bodily needs. This includes shelter and warmth, clean food, clean water, and clean air. If you have a survival kit, this will be as easy as locating and opening it. Otherwise, you will have to be more imaginative and use whatever you can find around you. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help if you are in a public place. The key is maintaining calm and using creativity.

Protecting Property

At this point, you should tend to protect your property as well as you can. Turn off gas and utilities if you fear leaks. Shut off appliances that may malfunction. Keep in mind that common things like electricity can be deadly in a disaster situation. If you must leave home, lock the house securely. Although protecting and caring for property should come only after protecting and caring for people, it is still a wise decision. Remember that you will have a life after the disaster, and adjusting will be that much easier if you have not lost everything.

Communicating with Help

In a major emergency, communicating with help may be as easy as stepping outside your home. Otherwise, a hand-wound or battery-operated radio can help keep you informed. Keep the radio on at all times, as it is important to be aware of any new developments in an emergency. If you need help, a small whistle can attract attention and guide rescuers to your location. If you already have an emergency survival kit, both of these items should be included in it. Often phone lines will be clogged either from damaged systems or overuse, so do not count on having a cell phone or even a traditional phone to communicate.

Contacting Family and Friends

Do you know who to call in case of emergency? It is important before an emergency to establish a procedure for communicating during disasters. One way of dealing with this is to have a message person who will be responsible for keeping track of all family members involved. As soon as possible, contact loved ones to let them know you are okay so they do not endanger themselves looking for you.

The keys to surviving a disaster are remaining calm and being prepared. Maintaining composure will help you make life-saving decisions and find creative solutions to any challenges that arise. If you have already prepared yourself with a well-stocked survival kit, you can wait out the emergency with confidence and emerge physically and emotionally unharmed.

Three Heat Troubleshooting Steps

With the cold days of winter right around the corner there is no better time to get your heating system checked out and running in tip top shape before you are relying on it every day. Even if you have taken good care of your heating system things can still go wrong and things can break down. If your heat does break down in the middle of the winter months here are three things you can do while you’re waiting for the repairman to arrive.

1. Confirm that your thermostat is set correctly: There are many different types of electronic and manual thermostats available and many of them are not easy to use right out of the box. Be sure to read your manual and make sure you don’t have any timers or switches set incorrectly. Before winter arrives it might be a good idea for you to pick a cool night and test your heat to make sure you know how to turn it on and off.

2. Make sure you haven’t blown a fuse: No matter what kind of heating system you have, whether it be forced hot air or baseboard or ambient or some combination, electricity is probably required. A simple house fuse blowing could prevent your heat from coming on. You might want to call an electrician if it happens more than once, because that could be the sign of a bigger and potentially more dangerous electrical problem in your home.

3. Read the instructions: If you have a manual for your heating system or thermostat then you should read that. If you don’t, then you should probably consider writing down some instructions in case you ever have to tell someone else how to turn your heat on or off in an emergency. Keep the written instructions in a closet or desk drawer that is closest to the thermostat of your home.

Heating systems can use many different types of fuel from oil, to natural gas to electricity and they can come in a variety of configurations. Heating systems are complex systems that are designed to keep you warm and run well for many years, but bad things do happen from time to time. If you’re uncomfortable with any of these troubleshooting tips, don’t hesitate to call a heating professional right away. If you are stuck without heat then play it safe and get to someplace that does have heat or use an auxilliary room heater as a temporary measure until you can get your heat running again.

Good luck and stay warm this winter!

Understanding Varieties of Kayak

Since the 1970s when the first rotomoulded kayaks were introduced there has been an explosion of kayak styles and designs to suit every purpose and every need imaginable.

The main categories of kayak available are white-water or river, sea kayaks, surf kayaks, racing and recreational. In some regions a kayak is also referred to as a canoe however there are three distinct areas where a canoe differs from a kayak. They are more flat bottomed, do not have a cockpit and are typically paddled with a single blade from kneeling position or from slightly elevated kayaks seats.

White-Water Kayak
Generally these types of boats are small and trade off speed for stability and are also highly maneuverable. They include short stubbed kayaks for weir play.
Normally designed for single paddlers and encompassing the recreational element of kayakers for sedate river journeys.

Sea Kayak
Sea kayaks are often long with a thin beam and designed to paddle on open water by one or two paddlers. They have plenty of storage facilities for any kayak accessories.

Sit on top Kayak
The sit on top kayak is gaining considerable popularity in recent years. The hull is sealed making it unsinkable. They have scupper holes around the cockpit area to allow for water to drain away. The sit on top kayak makes an ideal fishing kayak as typically the beam of the sit on top kayak is wide lending to the boats stability and allowing the fisherman or diver to exit and re-enter the kayak easily.

Surf kayak
A surf kayak is generally a smaller craft with a lot of rocker to the bow. They are made from a variety of plastics ranging from very tough to fragile. Surf kayaks are rated in two classes, high performance and international class with the later being at least three meters long. Derivatives of the surf kayak are the wave ski or the surf ski and certain sit on top kayaks. They generally have no space for any kayak accessories and are also designed for recreational surf play much similar to traditional surfboarding.

Wooden Kayak
There are two types of wooden kayak, stitch & glue and strip built. Stitch and glue kayaks are made from marine grade plywood and copper wire. Once the frame has been built the copper wire is removed and the kayak is covered with fibreglass to fortify the boat and provide a waterproof seal.

Strip built wooden kayaks are built using pine, redwood and cedar. They are considerably harder to build than their stitch & glue counterparts and as such can be expensive to buy off the shelf.

Inflatable kayak
Inflatable kayak sales have increased considerably in recent years as they make excellent entry level kayaks. An inflatable kayak can easily be transported and stored. A good inflatable kayak should not be confused with cheap blow up toys available from most department stores. An inflatable kayak is easily pumped up manually in a matter of minutes. It is best suited for river journeys and calm seas. Typically an inflatable kayak will not perform as well as a traditional plastic kayak. They are made from toughened PVC and sometimes come with a canvas or polyester jacket to protect the boat from splits and punctures. Normally designed for recreational purposes most inflatable kayaks have plenty of storage for any kayak accessories.

Fishing Kayak
The fishing kayak has also gained in popularity resulting in many kayak designs being altered and modified to suit this expanding sport. You can buy a fishing kayak with a twin hull or outrigger which increases stability allowing the fisherman to stand while fishing. A fishing kayak will quite often resemble a sit on top kayak.

Racing Kayak
Professional kayaks for racing purposes in the Olympic Games and world championships are designed for specifically for flat water racing. They are classed the K1, K2 and K4 representing the amount of paddlers respectively. They are extremely lightweight, unstable and expensive but they are, very fast.

How to Safely Replace an Electrical Outlet

One of the easiest home repairs to accomplish is the repair of an electrical outlet in a home. The trouble often lies with people not taking the necessary safety steps to ensure no injuries to the outlet or the installer during the process.

The first step is to turn off the electrical breaker that powers the outlet you are replacing. If there is any question about which breaker is serving the outlet in need of service turn off the main breaker to the home. An alternative is to plug a light into the top and bottom outlet and turn the breakers off one by one. When the feeding breaker is thrown, the lights will go out. Hint: The majority of home outlet breakers are 15 AMP.

If there is no power to the outlet or the outlet is malfunctioning, the electrical repairs will need to cease until a circuit tester can be found. The circuit tester is a small tool with a metal end that will tell the installer if there is power to the outlet. If no circuit tester can be found – throw the main breaker to the home.

The electrical outlet repairs can begin once the power to the outlet is shut off. The front cover of the outlet needs to be removed with a screwdriver and the outlet will need to also be removed. There should be a screw on the top of the outlet and the bottom of the outlet that will need to be removed. Pull out the outlet and notice the two wires in the back (may be three if there is a ground wire). These should be white and black with the optional ground wire being copper colored.

The neutral wire will be white and the wire feeding electric to the outlet will be black. With a piece of masking tape – mark the position of the wires on the old outlet. This may help you to replace the wires on the new outlet. Remove the wires from the old outlet and discard. Attach the wires to the new outlet in the correct spots. Some new outlets will have marks on the back denoting where the wires need to go. Remember – white is neutral and black is hot.

Once the wires are secured on the new outlet – screw the outlet back into the socket and place the outlet cover back in the original spot. Tighten the outlet cover screws and flip the power breaker back on. If the electrical repairs have been completed correctly – nothing will happen. If the wires have shorted or the outlet is wired incorrectly the breaker will immediately pop back off and rewiring will be needed.

After the breaker is securely on and not tripping – plug a light into the outlet to make sure the electrical outlet repairs are done correctly and smile because you wired an outlet without an electrician.

When working with electricity it is important to check and recheck the security of the wires. If there is any doubt that the wires are secure – stop and contact an electrician to complete the job. While it may feel great to do it yourself – safety should always come first.

Lighting Can Be Everything or It Can Be Nothing

Some homes are very inviting while others are not nearly as much. The difference, though not always noticeable, is the lighting. Homes that are not well lit or that use the cheapo lights tend to fill empty and uninviting.

The lighting in a home can either help the appearance or it can detract from it. The lighting can also say something about the home and the people who live there. When the lighting of a home does not match the style of the home, it makes the home feel cheap or patched together.

The use of designer lighting makes a noticeable difference in a home. Designer lights can be the finishing touch to a home that brings it all together. Some mistakenly think that designer lighting is not designed to be functional. Quite the opposite is true. It is designed not only to accentuate the look of the room, but to also be functional.

The modern style of lighting is one area where designer lighting is popular. Modern lighting is a think forward type design that typically uses polished metals and abstract shapes. This combination screams art makes an art and culture. It is definitely a statement about who you are and the style of the home.

Ironcraft is another style of designer lighting. This style appeals to the older generation and to those who appreciate historic things. Ironcraft is the style that has that old craftsman look to it, like someone from the past who took pride in the art of the work as well as the purpose of the work.

Designer lighting is a craft that is appreciated by those who can appreciate the work of artist. Lighting that is classified as designer typically has some sort of artistic nature to it. Functionality is not forgotten in designer lighting, but rather incorporated into the artistic nature of the lights. Using this style of lighting can also be a blessing when a light is needed in an area that any other light would simply look ugly.

Home owners, that have designer lighting, will tell you that it is well worth the money that they have spent on them. When someone uses apartment grade lighting in their nice home it devalues the aesthetic look of the home.

Designer lighting has another purpose and benefit to its use. When used in a home, it can increase the value of the home and make it more attractive to those who are looking to purchase the home. This can be a crucial benefit when in these tough economic times when it is difficult to sell a home.

Need a New VGA Cable – You Don’t Need to Buy the Manufacturer’s Original

VGA cables are used to connect a monitor to a computer. But did you know you don’t have to buy the computer manufacturers original cable? There can be many reasons for replacing your VGA cable, you may want a long VGA cable, you may have lost the original one, you may be using a VGA splitter that requires two cables or like many people today or you may want to display the image from your computer on your television screen using the ‘PC IN’ socket on your TV. Manufacturers such as Dell would charge in excess of fifteen pounds, around 24 dollars for a relatively short cable. You can save a small fortune by purchasing an independently branded VGA cable, a typical 1.8m cable can be bought online for just five pounds sterling or around eight dollars.

A VGA is also known as Dsub 15, and is typically 15 pin, they are arranges in three rows of 5 pins. Though some cable manufacturers only wire 14 pins as the 2nd pin on the middle row is not always used and money can be saved by not wiring that pin.

When purchasing a new VGA cable there are a few things to consider. The most important of which is shielding, monitor leads can suffer from interference due to other electrical equipment and cables that are close by. This interference usually manifests as ghosting on the screen image. You can reduce the effect of this interference if you select a cable that is shielded. You should also consider a cable that has ferrite cores on either end. Ferrites are barrel shaped coils wrapped around the cable, they are useful at reducing the effects of EMI (Electrical Magnetic Interference). If you are using a longer cable, over 5 meters in length, the cable will be prone to interference, however if you opt for a cable offering both shielding and ferrite cores you should reduce any effects of EMI. You should always use a shielded cable if you are using VGA splitters as the signal is weakened when it’s divided in two.

You can use a VGA cable at lengths up to 50 meters long, though if you intend using a cable as long as this you should ensure it’s shielded and has ferrite cores. In some instances you may need to use a repeater box, this amplifies the signal and ensure a good quality image at longer lengths.
